August, 2015 | Republican Party Central Committee Resolution

STATEMENT OF OPPOSITION TO CREATION OF A NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY
IN THE SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY COASTAL AREA

WHEREAS, the Republican Party of San Luis Obispo County stands for personal freedom, safe communities, healthy families, a robust local economy, smaller government and individual liberty; and

WHEREAS, the Republican Party of San Luis Obispo County recognizes that the Central Coast is a unique community – geographically, culturally, and socially; and

WHEREAS, the Republican Party of San Luis Obispo County supports the outstanding stewardship of the commercial fishing industry, commercial fishing facilities and the infrastructure needed for both the communities of Morro Bay Harbor District and the Port San Luis Harbor District; and

WHEREAS, the Republican Party of San Luis Obispo County supports the current federal and state regulations in place that protect the abundant natural resources of the San Luis Obispo coastal zone and inland waterways; and

WHEREAS, the Republican Party of San Luis Obispo County supports the existing partnerships between government agencies, universities and research institutions currently operating in coordination with local fishermen, recreational water users, agriculture operators, businesses and tourism ventures; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED by the Resolutions Committee of the Republican Party of San Luis Obispo County that because a sanctuary status invites additional federal regulations leading to further diminished local control therefore leaving important decisions about the Central Coast to non-residents and furthermore, additional regulations on the fishing industry would negatively impact multi-generational fishermen and women and their ability to provide a living for their families due to the redundant and costly regulations placed upon their industry, therefore the Republican Party of San Luis Obispo County opposes the formation of a National Marine Sanctuary in the waters along the San Luis Obispo County coast.
