REPUBLICAN PARTY OF SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY (RPSLO) RESOLUTION
SLOCOG MISUSE OF PUBLIC FUNDS/TAXPAYERS’ DOLLARS
FOR POLITICAL CAMPAIGNING
Whereas California state law specifically states its a felony for public officials to use public funds/taxpayers’ dollars for political campaigning;
Whereas the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments (SLOCOG) used hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars to campaign for Measure J-16, a county sales tax on the November 2016 ballot;
Whereas SLOCOG hired consultants to survey San Luis Obispo County voters on the sale tax proposal to learn what would be acceptable to them for passage of the
proposed county sales tax;
Whereas the hired consultants drafted the tax proposal accordingly based on the survey findings;
Whereas the SLOCOG staff held over 100 community outreach meetings to ‘educate’ and ‘persuade’ voters as to the need to approve Measure J-16, the sale tax proposal;
Whereas SLOCOG printed and mailed a separate 32 pageSupplemental Voter Information Pamphlet to all county voters that was little more than a campaign advocacy mailer;
Whereas a complaint was filed with the Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) by the Central Coast Taxpayers Association and the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association re SLOCOG’s use of public funds/taxpayers’ dollars for Measure J-16.
Whereas the FPPC is investigating this complaint, and has recently fined and referred for criminal investigation other, similar misuses of public funds for campaigns, now, therefore, be it
Resolved, that the Republican Party of San Luis Obispo County (RPSLO) condemns the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments (SLOCOG) misuse of public funds/taxpayers’ dollars for support of the 2016 Measure J-16 campaign.
